  • How many CD/DVD Image Discs will it take to hold my photos?
"As many as it takes." But, that is not the answer you want, is it? So let's look at the details, first the easy part:

Photo & Sound Saving will make it easy for you and offer that personal touch. Large projects may contain multiple image discs. If you have concerns about quantity, call, email or drop a note in with your projects asking PSS to contact you.

To archive your entire collection (or just part of it) Photo & Sound Saving reccomends a Portable Hard Drive.

To access a few older photos that you can share, print, use in your own slideshows or presentations Photo & Sound Saving will put them to an Image Disc for you.

To view a slideshow on your TV DVD Player let Photo & Sound Saving create it for you. PSS will provide an image disc (for the scanned images) and a Video DVD (for your TV), which can hold up to 1,400 photos with a view time of 5 seconds per photo (up to a 2 hour video).

  • Relive memories with a 2 hour video.
  • Presentations for an event usually run 20 minutes or less.

  • Now things get a lot more complicated. The quantity of photos that a CD or DVD Image Disc will hold depends on size and composition of the photos, the scan resolution and the format (jpg, tiff, png) used. After many months of testing and higher mathematical calculations we came up with the following table: A square inch of photo will, on average, require the follow disc space, dependant on scan resolution and output file type:

    File Type
File size for 1 square inch
    Scan DPI PNG JPEG
    300 ~136 kb ~64 kb
    600 ~531 kb ~247 kb
    800 ~883 kb ~407 kb
    1200 ~1.61 mb ~759 kb
    1600 ~2.66 mb ~1.22 mb

    Media Size
    CD 700 mb
    DVD 4,489 mb

So what does all that mean in real terms? Well, if you have 500 photos all of 3" x 5" size and scan at 600 DPI, saving the output in JPEG files, it will take:  15 sq. In. x 247 kb x 500 = 1,853 mb of disc storage. Which equates to 1 DVD or 3 CD Image Discs. If you include the Slideshow, you will receive your scans on either DVD or CD Image Discs plus a Video DVD containing the slideshow.

We can now save your entire media collection to a Portable Hard Drive.

What is the best resolution to have my photos scanned in?
The first thing Photo & Sound Saving wants to know is what do you wish to do with your scanned images?

  • Scanned images at 300dpi (dots per inch) is adequate to create a sldieshow.
  • Scanned Images at 300dpi is adequate to produce a print the same size as the original.
  • Images printed larger than the original require a higher scanned resolution (dpi).
  • Images requiring detailed editing should be scanned at higher resolutions.
  • Images scanned for archival purposes should be scanned at higher resolutions.

  • The quality of paper and printer is a large driving factor when reprinting scanned photos at their original size. Scan resolution becomes a driving factor when you wish to print the photo as an enlargement. This table will provide you with a guideline for selecting scan resolutions that allow enlargements to be printed.

What if I want my scanned photos arranged in a special order on my disc?
Your photos will not stay in the exact order that you ship them to us. You can, however, arrange them in themes of your choice. The photos for each theme will remain together, and you will be able to go through your list of photos and find all of the same vacation, sports events, pets, family, or other related items listed together, rather than scattered throughout the disc.

If you require your photos or slides to be batched together in a particular order or theme, please use a graphite pencil to lightly mark the back of your photos and band them together. Include instructions in the “Additional Instructions” section of your shopping cart.

    • Sort the pictures into the different themes of your choice.
    • Sort Black & White photos separate from Color photos.
    • Next step Sort according to size and orientation (portrait or landscape) within each of the already sorted sections.
    • Band together or use envelopes for sorted media.

    Additional Copies?
Your initial order contains one complete set of CD(s) and/or DVD(s) of the entire Group or Set. If it is a large order you might have multiple discs containing the complete initial order.

    • Additional copies are made by request.
To estimate the quantity of CD(s) and/or DVD(s) needed, each different “Group” name is considered a “Set.”
    • A “Set” can contain multiple CD(s) and/or DVD(s).
    • A “Set” can also contain a combination of CD(s) and DVD(s).
The ordering process provides you with the flexibility to order Additional Copies of any “Set” or portion of a “Set.”
    • I.e., A Photo Scanning order might require 2 CDs to store individual photos, and a DVD with a slideshow.
    • You have the option to order Additional Copies of just a slide show DVD and not the storage photos on CDs, or Additional Copies of the entire “Set.”
The quantity of CD(s) and/or DVD(s) required for your order is an estimate until your order is processed. You will be notified of any differences and adjustments will be made.

What do I get when adding music to film and/or slideshow?
Normal addition of music to the background of silent film or video and slideshows is the selection of Royalty Free Music.

We offer placement of clips from multiple genres throughout the film or slideshow to coordinate with the viewed activity, using the editors best discretion.

    • This process does not alter originals in any way.
    • All editing is done digitally and does not affect original film or tape.

How do I know which video codec to select?
Select Video DVD if you wish to view your video on TV or computer using a DVD Player.

If you ever plan to edit your video you might wish to have a copy of the AVI files.
AVI files are large and working with them you will need a lot of space.
We recomend a portable Hard Drive to store your AVI files. The advantage to working with your files from the portable HD is that they are all on one source.
AVI files can also be put to DVD, however you will only have up to 20 minutes of Video to each DVD.
Another option is to store AVI files on a MiniDV tape. The MiniDV tape will hold up to 1 hour of Video, but you need equipment to access your files from the tape.

You might opt to back up your entire collection of media, including the AVI files to a portable hard drive.
